To be eligible for a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) in Canada, you must meet specific criteria and demonstrate compelling reasons for your stay or enter Canada. Immigration officers assess whether your need to enter or stay outweighs any health or safety risks to Canadian society. Even minor inadmissibility issues require strong justification for entry or stay in Canada. TRPs are issued at the discretion of an officer, which can be issued up to 3 years.
Who Can Apply?
- Be inadmissible to Canada or not meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA)
- Have a criminal record (e.g., DUI, assault).
- Have a medical condition deemed a public risk.
- Have lost temporary status while in Canada (e.g. overstayed or out-of-status).

If your TRP is valid for at least 6 months, you may apply for:
- A work permit inside Canada
- A study permit inside Canada
